Nigeria’s Falconets kicked off their WAFU B U20 Girls’ Cup campaign on a bright note with a commanding 3–1 victory over Ghana’s Black Princesses at the Omnisport Stadium in Adjohoun, Benin, on Saturday.
The Falconets showed their class and composure against their familiar West African rivals, scoring twice in the first half through in-form forward Janet Akekoromowei, who bagged a superb brace.
Akekoromowei opened the scoring in the 40th minute from the penalty spot after a sustained spell of Nigerian pressure.
She then doubled the advantage on the stroke of halftime, taking advantage of a defensive mistake to make it 2–0.
Ghana came out stronger after the restart and quickly halved the deficit in the 50th minute to spark hopes of a comeback.
However, the Falconets remained disciplined in defence, frustrating the Black Princesses’ attempts to find an equaliser.
In the final minutes of the encounter, Favour Nkwocha sealed the win in style, curling in a spectacular goal directly from a corner kick to make it 3–1 and put the result beyond doubt.
The victory sees Nigeria move level on points with Ghana, who had earlier beaten hosts Benin Republic in their opening game. Benin sit bottom of the table after the defeat.
The Falconets will return to action on Sunday when they face hosts Benin Republic, while Ghana will enjoy a day’s rest before taking on the same opponents on Monday.
