The Lagos State Government, in collaboration with UNICEF and the Republic of Korea (ROK), has launched a Periodic Intensification of Routine Immunisation (PIRI) across the State to ensure no child is left behind. The exercise, to be conducted bi-monthly in June, August, and October 2026, targets children aged 0–9 years with routine vaccines and catch-up doses at designated health centres and outreach sites.
The intervention is focused on identifying and reaching zero-dose children, strengthening immunisation tracking systems, enhancing supportive supervision, and improving data-driven decision-making in health facilities across the LGAs.
According to Dr. Oludolapo Sotunde, Director, Medical Services and Disease Control, Lagos Health District IV, “The Periodic Intensification Routine Immunisation (PIRI) activities will be implemented bi-monthly, in three rounds, each round commencing on the second Saturday of the scheduled month and lasting for four days”.
She further said that the intervention would bolster routine services by increasing outreach, improving cold-chain logistics, and training frontline workers.
Community mobilisers and local leaders are engaging caregivers to reduce missed opportunities and address vaccine hesitancy. UNICEF provided technical support and supply chain assistance while the ROK supported financing and capacity-building initiatives.
Lagos State Primary Healthcare Board (LSPHCB), has also put necessary measures in place to support effective implementation at all the district’s Primary Healthcare Centres across local government areas and local council development areas’
Early reports show higher turnout and improved vaccine tracking, particularly in hard-to-reach areas. Health authorities urge parents to use the PIRI dates to update their children’s immunisation cards and attend follow-up sessions.
Officials emphasised that sustaining these gains will require continued community participation and strengthened routine services year-round.
This collaboration would drive improved quality healthcare service delivery, strengthening community well-being and overall health outcomes for residents of the district.
