    BY JOSEPH ODOEKWU

The first lecture of the year for the Imo State University Alumni Association (IMSUAA) Lagos Chapter, which took place on Sunday February 23rd, 2025, at La Mango, Ikeja GRA, during the association’s first General Meeting, has given birth to a baby project tagged “Back-To-School”.

The “Back-To-School” project, which is an Educational Empowerment initiative designed at providing financial assistance to enable some Lagos Chapter members pay their children’s school fees with ease was the highlight of the lecture after Chief Enyioha Chris Anywanwu, a former National President of the association dealt extensively with the topic “Core Principles of Alumni Associations”.

Prior to having the lecture, the association started the programme of the day with a Thanksgiving Mass at St. Agnes Catholic Church, Maryland at the 11am Mass, where members worshipped, thanked God for coming together again for the new year, and drew spiritual inspiration before settling down for the session where the inspirational lecture was delivered.

While delivering the lecture, Chief Anyanwu highlighted nine key salient points which he expatiate to buttress on the benefits available to members of an alumnus, which can be summarized as bonding, networking, building relationships, supporting each other, transparency and accountability, philanthropic, professional development, effective communication, preserving institutional heritage and tradition, as well as leadership development.

The Back-To-School initiative was conceived during the interactive session after members discussed extensively on how best to encourage bonding in Lagos Chapter, before a formal motion was moved by this writer for the creation of the education empowerment programme, while Saran-Ify Oguike who is currently serving as the National Treasurer of the Association seconded the motion.

All who were in attendance during the session approved of the initiative and it was unanimously agreed that a committee be formally set-up to fine-tune the project so they can come up with clearly defined modalities on how children of members who need assistance can benefit from the project when it will be launched by September 2025.

“We shall set up a committee to fine-tune the terms of reference and give this project the best, and I am sure that we should be able to propose a partnership with the National executive council and see how best we can add more credence to the project” an excited Dr. Nwaulu concluded.

  • Ministries Set Up Joint Committee To Tackle Fiber Cuts During Road Construction/Rehabilitation Activities

Ministries Set Up Joint Committee To Tackle Fiber Cuts During Road Construction/Rehabilitation Activities

The Federal Ministry of Works (FMoW) and the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy (FMoCIDE) have established a Joint Standing Committee on the Protection of Fiber Optic Cables to address the persistent issue of fiber optic cuts and damages caused by road construction and rehabilitation activities. These disruptions have had a significant negative impact on telecommunications services across Nigeria.

The Joint Standing Committee on Protection of Fiber Optic Cables was inaugurated Tuesday 18th February at the Boardroom of the FMoW, by the Permanent Secretary, Engr. Olufunso Adebiyi, and his counterpart at the FMoCIDE, Engr Farouk Yusuf, with the attendance of the Executive Vice Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, Dr. Aminu Maida. The Committee is comprised of key staff from the two ministries and the NCC.

The main assignment of the joint Standing Committee is to establish and maintain clear communication/co-ordination channels between the two ministries and the NCC in order to limit and prevent damage to Telecommunications Fiber Optic cables during road constructions or rehabilitation activities.

Engr. Adebiyi, while inaugurating the Committee, directed it to establish modalities to ensure the reduction of damage to deployed fiber optic cables resulting from road construction and maintenance activities, as well as vandalism which has caused severe incidences of service disruption across the country.

He said the Committee will serve as a coordinating body for all issues pertaining to the protection of fiber optic cables, before, during and after the completion of road constructions or maintenance activities, and will meet on a regular basis to discuss identified problems, agree on industry-wide solutions, set standard engagement processes and procedures, as well as share monthly performance reports.

“They are also expected to develop an instant communication mechanism to facilitate prompt communication and dissemination of information amongst all stakeholders,” he said.

He assured that going forward, the Ministry will ensure that the placement of fiber cables will be considered in the planning, design and construction of the country’s road networks, and would include providing for ducts during constructions.

Engr. Adebiyi further stated that the committee will work closely with all Federal Controllers of Works (FCW) to give attention to the task of protecting this sensitive infrastructure during the planning and implementation stages of projects across the roads in the country, while aligning with the telecom operators on all ongoing and future projects.

Engr. Farouk Yusuf, in his remarks, highlighted the significance of fiber optics cables to the country’s economy, stating that fiber networks are the backbone of Nigeria’s digital economy, enabling the seamless delivery of both fixed and mobile broadband services essential for nationwide connectivity, economic growth, and technological innovation.

He noted that the Committee’s work is crucial to ensuring that telecommunication services are not hampered by the work of construction companies.

The EVC/CEO of NCC, Dr. Aminu Maida, emphasized the significance of the Committee’s mandate, noting that it has the potential to significantly reduce service disruptions across Nigeria’s telecommunications industry.

“This is a pivotal moment for the telecommunication industry and its customers. Fiber networks are the foundation of Nigeria’s broadband ecosystem, providing the essential high-capacity backhaul required to deliver ultra-fast 4G and 5G speeds, as these next-generation mobile technologies rely on fiber infrastructure to ensure low latency, high reliability, and seamless data transmission.

“Last year, we experienced over 50,000 fiber cuts incidents across the country of which around 30,000 were attributed to Federal and State Road construction activities. In the extreme, some of these incidents had led to major network outages like the February 2024 nationwide MTN network outage.

“A key contributor to the increasing number of fiber cuts attributed to road construction activities is the lack of an efficient handshake mechanism between road construction companies and operators of the fiber infrastructure.

“I am optimistic that the work of this Committee will lead to a significant reduction in fiber cuts attributed to road construction which would then reduce network outages, avoid unnecessary expenditure on repair works and reduce the need to put redundant routes in place to serve as alternatives whenever there are outages due to fiber cuts.

“This initiative is not just for the benefit of the telecommunications industry but for all Nigerians. Every time a fiber cut occurs, consumers experience service disruptions. The industry is forced to invest in costly redundancy measures, but if we can prevent these avoidable disruptions, operators can redirect resources towards network expansion and infrastructure improvement,” Dr. Maida stated.

  • ICCD 2025: Second-hand Smoke and Childhood Cancer

ICCD 2025: Second-hand Smoke and Childhood Cancer

    BY ESI-IFE AROGUNDADE

This year’s International Childhood Cancer Day (ICCD) themed “Inspiring Action” reminds us that childhood cancer remains a tragic reality for many families. The most recent estimate from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) reveals that around 275,000 new cases of cancer occur worldwide in children aged 0–19 each year.

While the exact causes of most childhood cancers are still not fully understood, researchers are increasingly looking into environmental factors that may contribute to the risk. One area of growing concern is second-hand exposure, particularly regarding tobacco smoke.

Second-hand exposure refers to the inhalation of harmful substances by individuals who are not the primary users of those substances. In the case of tobacco products, it is also called second-hand smoke (SHS) exposure, a deadly problem for both young and old. According to the World Health Organisation, tobacco kills more than 8 million people each year, including an estimated 1.3 million non-smokers who are exposed to second-hand smoke.

In Nigeria alone, tobacco use claims about 26,000 lives and inflicts debilitating conditions and non-communicable diseases (NCDs) like cancer, heart disease, and chronic respiratory diseases on thousands more.

While the causes of childhood cancer are complex and multifaceted, addressing second-hand exposure remains a critical component of prevention efforts.

A study found that adolescents in Nigeria who were exposed to SHS had an increased risk of lung cancer. According to another study, exposure to SHS during pregnancy increased the risk of cancer in descendants.

Furthermore, maternal smoking during pregnancy may also be a risk factor for retinoblastoma and certain types of childhood brain tumours. Children who grow up in homes or environments where adults smoke are often subjected to these harmful chemicals, even if they do not smoke themselves.

Even brief exposure or living near a smoker can subject children to harmful carcinogens, leading to long-term health consequences. For children, living in households with smokers is the biggest risk factor for second-hand smoke exposure. Parental smoking, low socioeconomic status, low educational level, and less negative attitudes toward second-hand smoke have been associated with a child’s exposure to second-hand smoke at home.

Given the potential risks associated with second-hand exposure, parents and caregivers must take proactive steps to protect children. Some strategies to minimize exposure include creating a smoke-free environment, conducting regular health check-ups, and educating others about the danger of tobacco use and second-hand smoke.

Establishing a smoke-free home and car is one of the most effective measures to prevent second-hand tobacco smoke exposure. Family and friends should be encouraged to refrain from smoking.

Regular health check-ups should be scheduled for children to monitor their overall health and address any concerns with a paediatrician.

Spreading awareness about the potential risks of second-hand exposure to friends and family is also critical. Informing others can foster a community of support that prioritizes children’s health.

Ultimately, the solution to second-hand smoke-induced childhood cancer is not legalising or making tobacco products available to the Nigerian public.

By recognizing the potential risks of tobacco consumption and taking proactive measures, families can create healthier environments for children, ultimately contributing to the reduction of childhood cancer rates.

ICCD is a global collaborative campaign to raise awareness and promote an increased appreciation and deeper understanding of the challenges faced by children and adolescents with cancer, the survivors and their families. ICCD spotlights the need for more equitable access to treatment and care for all children with cancer, everywhere.

ICCD 2025 marks the second phase of a three-year global initiative focused on tackling the challenges faced by children with cancer.

  • Why I Want To Be Chairman Of Igbogbo Baiyeku LCDA – Abayomi Adelakun

Why I Want To Be Chairman Of Igbogbo Baiyeku LCDA – Abayomi Adelakun

Abayomi Adelakun, a Fellow of Institute of chartered accountant of Nigeria (FCA), pastor at Foursquare Gospel Church, and aspirant for the chairmanship position of Igbogbo Baiyeku LCDA, has shared the story of how God’s calling is propelling him to contest for the number one political seat in the local council in the forthcoming local government elections in Lagos State

Speaking to reporters, Adelakun, a former chairman of the Community Development Committee (CDC) in Igbogbo Bayeiku LCDA, also talked on how his political journey started.

“God told me to go and save the dying souls, but as a pastor and a man of God, I mistook it for evangelism,” he said. However, after preaching on buses for three times a week, Adelakun received further clarification from God. “A voice came back to me and said, ‘God said this is not the souls I’m calling you to save, I am talking about the dying souls, not the lost ones.’”

This revelation led Abayomi Adelakun to organize three (3) successful medical outreach programs across the five political wards between month of April and June 2024.

“Thank God for Alhaji Doctor Muktar Saka Adeshina who is a mentor to me, he encouraged and assisted me in getting drugs. We also got support from two doctors, one from LUTH and the other one from general hospital” Adelakun said.

“The three editions of the medical outreach had over 1500 participants, who were attended to and we treated people with special cases like high blood pressure and tuberculosis, I took them to the hospital and cared for them and returned them to their houses. I felt the joy inside me doing this” he noted.

After the success of his medical outreach in these communities Abayomi Adelakun was honored with the ‘IKORODU MAN OF THE YEAR’ award in 2024.

” After we completed the second edition of the outreach, I got a call from somebody that I should come to Ikorodu town hall. When I got there, I was asked if I was a politician or a local government chairman to be doing all that i have been doing. I told them that I was doing it because of what God told me and that was how they decided to honour me with the man of the year award in 2024″ he explained.

On his ambition to contest for the chairmanship position of Igbogbo Bayeiku LCDA, Adelakun, who was the chairman of the CDC in the local council, said has been specially prepared and trained for the upcoming task.

As a fellow of ICAN, Adelakun believes that his professional experience sets him apart from other aspirants.

“I have been a manager of human resources, and I have run my own accounting firm for over 20 years.”

Adelakun’s connection with the people of Igbogbo Baiyeku LCDA is also a key aspect of his campaign.

“My people have been agitating for me to contest for the chairmanship position, based on my impact and contributions to the community, especially when I was chairman of the CDC, bringing impactful and purposeful leadership to the populace.” he said.

But his decision to throw his hat into the political ring did not come as a walk in the park.

After seeking counsel from his senior pastors and seeking the face of God Adelakun received God’s assurance to proceed with the chairmanship race.

“Lord spoke to me that I should go, that He will be with me,” Abayomi said.

If elected as chairman, he plans to encourage children of education age, improve educational facilities because education is the bedrock of any development and best legacy that any parent can bequeath to any child, focus on completing and upgrading primary healthcare units, improving market areas, youth empowerment, see to the welfare of elderly, widow, people living with disabilities, create good environment and encourage entrepreneurship, maintain peace and security, uphold the rich cultural heritage, create enabling environment for tourist attractions along the coastal areas e.g Ibeshe, Bayeku, Offin/Oreta and empowering traders.

“I will see to the completion and upgrading of all primary healthcare units in Igbogbo Baiyeku, because I believe that health is wealth” Adelakun said.

“I will also improve our markets areas and empower the traders. I will ensure that we do follow up on all our roads that need government intervention” he stated.

Abayomi Adelakun aims to expedite the development of the LCDA, assuring the people of igbogbo Baiyeku that, ” I will fast track the development of igbogbo Baiyeku LCDA” Abayomi in his words said you can always do small things in a great way”.

Abayomi was a member of Prince Tajudeen Oluyole Olusi Reception Dinner in 2024 and also member of 2025 Prince Tajudeen Oluyole Olusi Annual Symposium.
