Maida: Nigeria Telecoms Sector Needs Forward-looking Policy Frameworks To Regulate Emerging Technologies

NCC

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has commenced a crucial two-day Stakeholders’ Policy Review Workshop at the Marriott Hotel in Ikeja, Lagos, aimed at reviewing the National Telecommunications Policy (NTP) 2000.

Independent News Express gathered that the workshop serves as a strategic forum for stakeholders to assess the progress made in the telecommunications sector over the years, celebrate major achievements, and chart a new course for Nigeria’s digital future.

Speaking at the opening session, the Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (EVC/CEO) of the NCC, Dr. Aminu Maida, stated that the communications industry has transformed from a standalone sector into a critical foundation for national development.

Dr. Maida stressed that sustaining the sector’s growth requires strong and forward-looking policy frameworks to regulate emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Satellite Broadband, the Internet of Things (IoT), Critical National Information Infrastructure, Digital Sovereignty, Network Resilience, Sustainable Innovation, and Quality of Experience (QoE).

Referencing data from the GSMA, the NCC boss explained that the strategic digital transformation of sectors including agriculture, manufacturing, transportation, and trade could add an extra two per cent to Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), create about two million jobs, and generate approximately N1.6 trillion in tax revenue.

He also noted that modern telecommunications regulation must urgently address issues such as cybersecurity, data governance, digital financing, and online safety to keep pace with global developments.

According to the workshop programme, technical panel sessions are focusing on several key areas, including:
• The evolution and impact of the NTP 2000.
• Strategies for bridging the digital divide through collaborative implementation.
• Building a resilient digital future that balances innovation, security, and trust.
• International telecommunications policy models and global best practices.
• Stakeholder review of the Commission’s proposed policy reforms.

Participants at the workshop agreed that the review process is aimed at creating a resilient, inclusive, and future-ready digital economy capable of benefiting all Nigerians.
