New football season action continues this weekend across the major European leagues with action involving Super Eagles players in the Premier League, Spanish Laliga, and Italian Serie A.
Taiwo Awoniyi, Emmanuel Dennis, Ola Aina, and Alex Iwobi will be in action for their respective clubs in the Premier League, while the Serie A returns with Victor Osimhen, Samuel Chukwueze, Ademola Lookman, and Isaac Success in action in Italy.
Week two Premier League action will begin on Friday with Taiwo Awoniyi, Ola Aina, and Emmanuel Dennis hoping to get their first point of the season when Nottingham Forest hosts Sheffield United, live on SuperSport Premier League (DStv ch 203 and GOtv ch 66), at 7:45pm.
On Saturday, Liverpool takes on AFC Bournemouth at 3pm and Tottenham Hotspur will host Manchester at 5:30pm. Spurs played out a draw with Brentford last weekend while United managed a controversial 1-0 win over Wolves. Spurs have lost four and drawn one of their last five matches against the Red Devils. Also on Saturday, Premier League and European champions, Manchester City will host Newcastle at the Etihad Stadium. Fresh from their UEFA Super Cup victory over Sevilla, the Citizens will be without their inspirational midfielder, Kevin De Bruyne who is expected to be out for four months due to injury. Newcastle finished in the top four last season, and have started the new campaign on a bright note, courtesy of a resounding 5-1 victory over Aston Villa. This intriguing encounter will be broadcast live on SuperSport Premier League (DStv ch 203 and GOtv ch 66), at 8pm.
On Sunday, Chelsea will travel to London Stadium to take on Europa Conference League winners, West Ham. This London derby will also be live on SuperSport Premier League (DStv ch 203 and GOtv ch 66), starting at 4:30pm. Chelsea’s last win at West Ham came in April 2021, when a Timo Werner strike secured them a 1-0 victory. They have since lost one and drawn one of their last two visits to the London Stadium.
Wrapping up week two Premier League fixture is another London derby which will see league runner up Arsenal, travel to Crystal Palace on Monday. The Gunners won 2-0 on their last visit to Selhurst Park on the opening day of last season and have won three of their last five matches against Palace. Both teams won their opening-day fixtures, which set the tone for an interesting Monday Night Football showdown, live on SuperSport Premier League (DStv ch 203 and GOtv ch 66), at 8pm.
In Italy, Serie A action will begin on Saturday with defending champions, Napoli traveling to newly promoted Frosinone at 5:30pm, while Inter Milan will host Monza at 7:45pm. Osimhen led his Napoli team to their first title in 33 years last season, and all eyes will be on the Nigerian striker to carry his team all the way again this season. Lookman’s Atalanta will travel to Sassuolo on Sunday at 5:30pm, while Isaac Success Udinese will host Juventus at 7:45pm. All the matches will be live on SuperSport Variety 3 (DStv ch 208 and GOtv ch 63).
The weekend’s Spanish Laliga action will see Real Madrid travel to Almeria, showing on SuperSport LaLiga (DStv ch 204 and GOtv ch 62), at 6:30pm on Saturday. On Sunday, defending champions, Barcelona will host Cadiz, at 6:30pm, while Real Betis will also host Atletico Madrid, at 8:30pm. All Laliga matches will be live on SuperSport LaLiga (DStv ch 204 and GOtv ch 62).
