For Enobong “The Nigerian Gentleman” Umohette, victory in Santa Marta, Colombia, was about much more than adding another win to his professional boxing record.

It was another chapter in a remarkable comeback story.

The Akwa Ibom-born, United States-based heavyweight secured the 20th victory of his professional career when he defeated former WBL heavyweight champion Fidel “Infierno” Munoz by unanimous decision in an eight-round contest at the Santa Marta Sports Complex.

The victory also saw Umohette successfully defend his UBC South American regional title and extend his remarkable winning run to 11 consecutive victories.

But unlike some of his previous contests, where the emphasis was on ending the fight inside the distance, Umohette’s latest performance was a demonstration of patience, discipline and championship maturity.

Munoz came into the contest with considerable experience. The Colombian, a hometown hero and favourite, had accumulated more than 80 professional fights, including 35 knockout victories.

In front of his home crowd, he attempted to use his mobility and lateral movement to frustrate the Nigerian heavyweight.

Umohette, however, refused to be drawn into a reckless exchange.

He controlled the centre of the ring, steadily applied pressure, cut off Munoz’s movement and consistently landed clean punches. Round after round, he imposed his strategy on the experienced Colombian.

When the final bell sounded, there was little doubt about the judges’ verdict.

All three judges scored the fight in Umohette’s favour.

For the boxer and his team, the victory represented another important step in a comeback journey that has steadily rebuilt his career and reputation in the heavyweight division.

Umohette subsequently expressed gratitude to God, his family, promoter Erik Fleming, co-promoter Chief Monte Ekott, boxing fans and his supporters in Nigeria and the United States for standing behind him throughout the journey.

While celebrating his own achievement, Umohette turned the spotlight on two fellow Nigerians making their own marks in heavyweight boxing—Anthony Joshua and Moses Itauma.

Umohette congratulated former unified heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua on his spectacular victory over Albanian fighter Kristen Prenga, praising Joshua for demonstrating the resilience associated with elite championship boxing.

For Umohette, Joshua’s story goes beyond what happens inside the ropes.

He pointed to the personal adversity Joshua endured following the tragic death of close associates in a fatal car crash last year, a tragedy that also left the heavyweight star dealing with significant physical and emotional trauma.

Umohette believes Joshua’s return to the ring after such a difficult period demonstrates the mental strength required to remain at the highest level of professional boxing.

To him, that resilience is just as important as punching power.

Umohette was equally enthusiastic when discussing another rising star with a connection to his home state of Akwa Ibom—21-year-old Moses Itauma.

He commended Itauma following his IBF world title contention against highly decorated Croatian heavyweight Filip Hrgovic, describing the young fighter as one of the most exciting prospects in the division.

Itauma’s rapid rise has attracted significant attention in international boxing circles, and Umohette believes the youngster possesses the qualities necessary to eventually become a world champion.

He also pointed to the historical significance of Itauma’s progress, noting that the young heavyweight is attempting to reach a level of achievement associated with legendary names in the sport.

According to Umohette, Itauma may have suffered disappointment on Saturday night, but the setback should not define his career.

“Even though Saturday night was not his night, Itauma is the future of heavyweight boxing. He will bounce back and ultimately capture the coveted world heavyweight title,” Umohette said.

For a boxer who understands the twists and turns of a professional career, the message was clear: defeat can be a chapter, but it does not have to be the story.

Behind Umohette’s latest victory was also a deliberate strategy from his team.

His promoter, Erik Fleming, described the Munoz fight as an important examination of Umohette’s durability and ability to operate at championship distance.

Speaking from California, Fleming explained that Umohette needed to demonstrate that he could comfortably fight eight, 10 and eventually 12 rounds without becoming overly dependent on securing a knockout.

Umohette had last completed an eight-round distance in Mexico in 2023. Since then, he had gone on to win seven consecutive fights by knockout.

The Munoz contest therefore provided a different kind of test.

Instead of chasing the spectacular finish, Umohette was required to demonstrate control, endurance, tactical awareness and the ability to win rounds.

He passed that test.

Fleming also praised the professionalism of the Santa Marta boxing commission, particularly because the fight took place in front of Munoz’s home supporters.

In a sport that has occasionally been overshadowed by controversial decisions, Fleming said Umohette’s unanimous points victory demonstrated the credibility of the officiating.

At 20 wins and just three defeats, Umohette is now looking towards another significant step in his career.

Fleming disclosed that discussions would soon begin over a potential showdown with European heavyweight champion Labinot Xhoxhaj.

Such a fight would represent another major examination of the Nigerian-American heavyweight and could provide an opportunity to further strengthen his credentials on the international stage.

For now, however, the victory in Santa Marta offers Umohette another reason to believe that his comeback is gathering momentum.

The road back has demanded patience, resilience and belief.

And at 20 professional victories, “The Nigerian Gentleman” appears determined to make sure that the next chapter of his story is even bigger than the last.
