The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has urged telecommunications consumers across the country to verify the approval status of their mobile devices before purchase to ensure compliance with applicable technical standards.
The commission said the initiative is part of efforts to strengthen Type Approval compliance, enhance consumer protection and promote the use of safe, reliable devices on Nigerian mobile networks.
In a consumer awareness campaign, the NCC encouraged users to check whether their SIM-enabled devices have received the necessary approval before connecting them to telecommunications networks.
According to the commission, consumers can verify their devices by dialling *315# to access the NCC Device Checker or visiting its official website at www.ncc.gov.ng/DeviceChecker.
The commission also highlighted the importance of device verification in addressing concerns surrounding second-hand phones, devices purchased abroad and International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) checks.
It further encouraged consumers with questions about device verification, Type Approval requirements and the use of the Device Checker to seek clarification through its toll-free customer assistance line by calling 315.
The NCC explained that strengthening Type Approval compliance would help promote safer devices, improve network quality and reliability, and protect consumers against the risks associated with non-compliant equipment.
It urged Nigerians to make device verification a priority whenever they intend to purchase mobile phones and other SIM-enabled devices.
The commission reiterated its commitment to building a safer and more secure digital environment, urging consumers to embrace the message: “Check Before You Buy. Connect with Confidence!”
