All is now set for the 28th edition of GOtv Boxing Night holding today at the Molade Okoya-Thomas Indoor Sports Hall of Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos.
The boxing event will feature seven bouts across different weight categories, including a big fight between London-based World Boxing Federation (WBF) Intercontinental featherweight champion, Taiwo “Esepor” Agbaje, and Twalib Tuwa of Tanzania.
Ahead of the showdown, boxers have been involved in boasts and counter-boasts. Esepor, who is ranked 39th in the world by the WBF, bragged to eat up his opponent, Tuwa, like the popular Nigerian meal, Tuwo.
“Tuwa sounds like Tuwo to me. Tuwo is a light, easy- to-eat-and-digest food. I have no doubt that Tuwa is the same and will be eaten and digested with ease like Tuwo Shinkafa.” Esepor boasted.
In a counter-boast, Tuwa said Esepor should be ready to lose his unbeaten status. “I fight like a lion in the ring. I don’t hold back. I have heard of Esepor’s record. I am more experienced than him and I will end his record,” he said.
Another boxer, Steven ‘Freeman’ Kadima was also upbeat about his fight against Godwin Ambrose. Kadima promised that “Ambrose will fall yakata” when he receives some hard punches from him.
National lightweight boxer, Azeez Ayobami ‘Latest’ has also been talking ahead of his clash with Tosin Osaigbovo. Latest said his aim is to pocket the N1m cash prize and the Mojisola Ogunsanya Memorial Trophy meant for the overall best boxer on the night. He vowed that his opponent will not stop him from achieving his goal.
For the national super featherweight challenge of the night, Ibadan-based boxer, Samuel “Apata Roro” Moses, said he has come to Lagos to beat up Michael Adeosun, in front of his home fans. “There’s a reason why they call me ‘Apata Roro’. I’m a rock and can’t be intimidated. I will defeat Michael right in front of his fans in Lagos,” he raved.
Featherweight boxer, Dolapo Omole also vowed that his challenger, Gbolahan Mojeed, will not last the eight-round distance with him in the ring. “This is a big opportunity for me to announce myself on a big stage. I’ve won all my seven fights by knockout. Gbolahan will make eight,” he boasted.
Meanwhile, the event organisers have assured fans of maximum security in and around the venue. Speaking on the security arrangements, Chief Operating Officer, Flykite Productions, Bamidele Johnson, said “We have put measures in place to guarantee the security of fans who come to enjoy the boxing fest. There will be policemen, who will complement a leading private security firm to ensure the safety of everyone in the vicinity during the event.”
