Football does not always ask how beautifully you begin. Sometimes it asks what you become after you have been wounded.
Madagascar struck first in Uyo.
The stadium tightened. The contest changed. Nigeria were no longer playing the match they had prepared for โ they were being asked to recover it.
From a midfielderโs eye, adversity reveals structure: distances can stretch, patience can disappear and confidence can begin to crack.
Nigeria refused to crack.
They regrouped, kept playing and turned a one-goal deficit into a 2โ1 victory.
It was not flawless.
It was something more important for the opening night of a qualification campaign:

That is measurable improvement.

My responsibility as a football analyst is to examine the game, the tactics and the evidence as fairly as possible.
Opinions matter. Tactical observations matter. But when measurable evidence is available, emotion should not replace it.

Tradition has value. Reputation commands attention.
But neither can tackle, create space or score.
