Dikko Highlights Investment Opportunities in Nigeria’s Sports Economy at US-Nigeria Council Event

Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko has highlighted the growing investment opportunities within Nigeria’s sports economy, pointing to the need for stronger infrastructure, private-sector participation, sponsorship and the right incentives to unlock the sector’s full potential as a key driver of Economic development and Social impact.

Speaking on Wednesday at the U.S.-Nigeria Council Annual Breakfast held on the margins of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Dikko said President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, has taken a bold, intentional and deliberate step in resetting Nigeria’s sports ecosystem, creating a stronger foundation for the sector to contribute to economic growth and attract investment in addition to sustainable competitive performance on the pitch across all sports.

The Chairman stressed that sports should be viewed as a wider ecosystem, bringing together athletes, businesses, creative professionals, services Industry, technology, investors and infrastructure developers, while government provides an enabling environment through appropriate policies, legal frameworks, incentives and concessions.

He also highlighted the commercial value of sports audiences, particularly football, and the opportunity to leverage that reach to attract stronger sponsorships, collaborations and partnerships to unlock the massive potentials of sports economy. Dikko pointed to the wider economic opportunities surrounding sports infrastructure, including the development of stadiums, arenas, hotels and other supporting facilities, noting the potentials for such investments to generate and drive activity across multiple sectors.

The Chairman further took the opportunity to provide updates on the unprecedented reforms and resetting of the sports sector to positions the sector as a critical driver of economic development, a tool for national cohesion, and a medium for promoting Nigeria’s cultural identity and unity. Several key aspects of the reforms under the RHINSE framework from institutional, governance, the recognition of sports as a national asset, funding including the proposed sports infrastructure development Bond; infrastructure renewal driving by the sports city concepts, education through the NSEEP, economic contributions detailing the impact to the GDP and job creation and indeed the performance on the pitch driving by the elite athletes board and diaspora board etc were all explained.

The engagement, which featured U.S. and Nigerian business leaders, government officials and other strategic stakeholders, provided a platform to explore opportunities for trade, investment and partnerships across Nigeria’s sports and creative economy.

The Chairman’s remarks align with the Federal Government’s ongoing efforts to reposition sports as an economic sector, with President Tinubu having directed comprehensive reforms in Nigerian football and emphasised the importance of investment, infrastructure and private-sector participation.

At the conclusion of the engagements, several investors expressed delight at the progress made potentials of Nigerian Sports confirming interest for partnerships, collaborations and indeed investment within the Nigeria Sports ecosystem system.
