Former Adamawa Queens player, Gift Kanu has congratulated U-17 Nigerian women’s team popularly known as Flamingo after defeating its counterpart, South Africa 2-0 in the return leg of U-17 FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifying match which held on Saturday evening at the Remo Stars Stadium, Ikenne Ogun State.
Nigeria walloped its opponents 3-1 in the first leg in South Africa and making return leg easy for the West Africa country.
While reacting to the flamingo victory, the Abia born player commended impressive performance of the girls saying that their victory in both legs were well deserved.
“Flamingo are the best team in Africa and they have been consistent in the last few years.I am happy that they beat South Africa home and away and this is to tell you that we are above them when it comes to Women football in Africa.
“The South African girls are equally a good side but playing Nigeria at the world cup qualifying match is a difficult task for them.Once again I congratulate our girls for making us proud and I wish them all the best in their remaining matches, said Kanu who played for Elite AC of Benin Republic last season before she sustained injury.
Meanwhile, Harmony Chidi and Aishat Animashaun scored for Nigeria to end the enounter 5-1 on aggregate.
Nigeria will face either Botswana or Algeria in April in the final qualifying round to book a place at the 2025 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.
