A Lagos Federal High Court has convicted and sentenced a 25-year-old drug peddler, Amada Baba, five years imprisonment without an option of fine.
The convicted drug peddler was given the jail terms, by Justice Yelim Bogoro, after he pleaded guilty to the five counts charge bordering on unlawful dealing in banned substances, slammed on him by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
The prosecutor, N. J. Mamza, had told the court that the Convict was arrested on January 23, 2022, at Alade Market Allen Avenue Ikeja, Lagos State, with 1.8 kilograms of Marijuana; 2 grams of Molly; 5 grammes of methamphetamine; a pinch of cocaine and heroine.
The convict’s offences according to the prosecutor, contravened Section 11 {c) of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Act Cap N30 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004 and punishable under same Act.
The convict pleaded guilty to the charge.
Upon his guilty plea, the prosecutor reviewed the facts of the charges and urged to Convict and sentence him as charged.
But the convict, in his allucutor, pleaded with the court to tamper justice with mercy and promised not to engage in such illicit acts.
Justice Bogoro, in her judgment, sentenced the convict to three years in counts one, three and five, while be given two years and five years in count two and count four respectively, without an option of fine.
The judge however ordered that the sentences should run concurrently.
In a related development, Justice Ambrose Lewis-Allagoa, of the same jurisdiction of the court, today, ordered the remand of a drug courier, Ayoade Kehinde Tayo, pending the review of criminal charge brought against him by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
Justice Lewis-Allagoa remand order was sequel to the alleged drug courier plea of guilty to the two counts charge of unlawful export of banned substances made against him by the NDLEA.
NDLEA prosecutor, Juliana Imaobong irobochi, had told the court the alleged drug courier was arrested with 500 grammes of Tramadol and 500 grammes of Rohypnol, on November 13, 2022, at the departure hall of Muritala Muhammed International Airport Ikeja Lagos, during the outward clearance of passengers to Istanbul, Turkey.
The prosecutor told the court that the defendant concealed the banned drug in a ‘Ghana must go’.
She also told the offence commited by the defendant, contravened Section 11(b) of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Act Cap No 30 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.
The defendant admitted committed the crime, and pleaded guilty to the two counts charge.
Justice Lewis-Allagoa has fixed February 20, for the review of fact and sentence.
