Ward H football team have won the Inaugural edition of Lagos Mainland Unity Cup following their 2-1 victory recorded against Ward C football team in the final.
The pulsating final which was played recently at Ojoniyu Sports center, Mainland, Lagos, saw Ward H emerged as champions after scintillating performance in the encounter watched by mammoth crowd.
The competition was organized by sports enthusiast, Honourable Adekunle Adebanjo in conjunction with Damilola Taylor Foundation.
Only footballers who are 40 years old above and reside in Mainland are eligible to feature in the tournament.
All the nine wards in Mainland took part in the tournament which started three weeks ago at the two centres in the Mainland.
Speaking after the match, the cup donor, Adebanjo thanked God for the success of the competition noted that his involvement in sponsoring football is borne out of passion he has for the round leather game.
“Sponsoring a competition of this magnitude is to encourage footballers who are above 40 years old to return to field of play after their retirement, and secondly, I also want to contribute my own quota to football development in Mainland which is part of my support for Mainland footballers,” he said.
In his speech, Honourable Olalekan Biliamin Oba, Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the Governor of Lagos State on Social Development expressed gratitude to the cup donor for his commitment to football development in the Mainland.
He however praised the cup donor for this initiative and reinstated the government commitment to youths and social development in the state.
He urged the youths in Mainland to work in line with vision of government saying that the Governor Sanwo-Olu is committed to sports development in the state.
During the medal presentation, Ward H received a giant trophy with medal and sum of N100,000 while runner up also got sum of N50,000 and medal.
