Boxing fans, enthusiasts and stakeholders, gathered under the overhead bridge at the National Stadium, Surulere, Saturday, to watch and enjoy exciting boxing duels in the maiden edition of the ‘Street Rumble’, Boxing Season 1, organised by the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) On Sports, To Lagos State Governor, Hon. Damilare Orimoloye.
Speaking with journalists at the event, the youthful sports administrator remarked that the event aligns with the Lagos State Government T.H.E.M.E.+ agenda, which focuses on social inclusion, gender equality and youth engagement.
According to Orimoloye who disclosed that his love for sports, particularly boxing, was influenced by his father who was a boxing enthusiast, as he grew up watching the likes Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield and others.
While extolling the sterling ethos of boxing, he stated that boxing is a unique sport, as it unites people, fostering strong bonds regardless of background.
He continued, “Street Rumble Boxing, aims to give back to the community, engage Lagos youth in sports, enrich social development, and promote athletic achievement. Lagos is home to many talented individuals who can excel in boxing. These talents can be discovered, nurtured, and developed into champions and mentors.
“Boxing is called the sweet science of sports and to me, it started on the street and I just feel taking it to the streets, will do more justice in seeing the originality and the titles already speak the dimension, “Street Rumble’.
” I assure you that Street Rumble Boxing is here to stay, providing opportunities for boxers to showcase their skills and be scouted by coaches, who will nurture them to compete for Lagos State locally and internationally.
“With the Governor’s full backing, I reiterate that this initiative will expand to include more sports, all happening in the secure and conducive environments under the refurbished bridges of Lagos.
He expressed his sincere appreciation to the Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Mr. Lekan Fatodu, the Commissioner for Youths and Social Development, Hon. Mobolaji Ogunlende, and the directors for their collaboration and support in making this event possible.
