The 1st edition of the National Deaf Table Tennis Championship has ended in Lagos with Nurudeen Badmus from Delta State and Jimoh Idayat of Lagos State emerging the men and women’s singles champions respectively, thereby carting home the giant trophies and cash prizes therein.
Held on Friday June 2, 2023, at the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation knock-up hall, National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos, over 32 players drawn from 9 states across the country took part in the one-day exercise which was aimed at boosting deaf sports in the country.
Sponsor of the championship and Chairman of Deaf Table Tennis Association, Mr. Amuda Yusuf Ibrahim said the sponsorship was born out of his love and passion to see deaf sports especially deaf table tennis develop in Nigeria, adding that the championship was aimed at identifying players that would represent Nigeria at forthcoming 1st African Deaf Table Tennis Championship to be staged. in Nigeria.
Amuda thanked the president of Deaf Sports Federation Alh. Sulieman Saka Dagbo, his vice Mr. Ige Jenyo Olawale Samuel and the technical Director, Ms Adesola Adesina for their support.
He also commended the athletes for the large turnout.
Meanwhile the duo of Jimoh Idayat(Lagos) and Tokosi Munirat (Kogi) won the women’s doubles title while Babatunde Adeniran(LG) paired with John Ekpemido (Lago) to claim the men’s doubles title thus making it an all-Lagos victory.
Nurudeen Badmus and Ganiyat Animashsun (Delta) won the mixed doubles category.
