Akwa Ibom – Nigerian born and United States based former heavyweight boxing champion, Enobong “The Nigerian Gentleman” Umohette has consolidated his last year October 2022 nearly eight year retirement come-back fight, with another spectacular victory in far away Tijuana Mexico.
In his first fight out of U.S soil, which took place over the weekend on Saturday April 1st 2023 at Evolution Club, Tijuana Mexico, Umohette took on tough and rugged Luis “The Mexican Brawler” Sanchez in an 8 round contest.
Drawing a rousing and standing ovation from the home town Mexican crowd for his uniquely catchy ring attire, Umohette adorned not only his traditional Nigerian Green-White-Green boxing trunks with USA flag patch but he also entered the ring wearing a Mexican Aztec warrior mask and robe, also flying the Mexican flag in solidarity with the great people of Mexico for their tremendous contribution to the sport of boxing and their rich cultural heritage.
Fight analysts from La Voz del boxeo described the bout as an interesting encounter where Umohette controlled the entire fight from the center of the ring, showing remarkable agility, reflex and ring generalship while the Mexican brawler “Sanchez” used a lot of lateral movements in spurs of high intensity and frequent offensives at the Nigerian gentleman.
Umohette surprised fight analysts by pressing the fight to Sanchez from bell to bell, while still out-boxing and out-maneuvering his rival during exchanges. With The Nigerian Gentleman’s increasing momentum and output as the rounds went by, Luis “The Mexican Brawler” Sanchez failed to answer the bell for the fifth round, handing Umohette a TKO victory in round 5.
Speaking from his Wisconsin USA residence, Umohette thanked God for the victory and thanked all who have continued to support his effort to inspire through the sport of boxing. Umohette was led into battle by coaches Fred Lagrandier and Peter Alferez while his manager Rhonda Yates, Promoter Erik Fleming, team mate Jeremiah “The Beast Williams’ and head coach George Offiong monitored the event remotely.
Umohette’s head coach Mr George Offiong described him as among a rare breed of athletic specimens who possess the longevity genetics, having overseen a training camp that had the Nigerian gentleman undergo the most rigorous of regimens and still out-perform much younger athletes in various parameters and metrics.
Offiong further added, that with consistent improvement and dedication, Umohette will ascend to compete at elite world championship 10 to 12 round levels in the nearest future and will continue to bring honor and pride to Nigeria in all his endeavors.
