The remarkable performances of Afrobasket reigning champions D’Tigress, has set the opinion polls alive and with the recently appointed Head Coach of the team, Rena Wakama, in the limelight.
It could be recalled that her appointment to the exalted position as head coach of the team, stirred a few nests. However, her performances, so far with the team, has brought the beams of the positve lights on her.
Afrobasket championship has a remarkable history of females coaches in the championship. And most of them, including Nigeria’s Shola Ogunade-Shomala, coming as assistant coaches.
Natosha Cummings-Price was the first female to work as head coach of a senior national team in Africa. The American led Cameroun to a 10th place finish in the 12-team FIBA Women’s Afrobasket in Dakar, Senegal in 2019.
Rena Wakama, has therefore, set an enviable record for females, as head coach of a senior women’s national team. The young Nigerian lady made history as first African woman to head a team to the Afrobasket.
