NCC Promotes Eco-Friendly Telecommunications Drive, Aiming for 50% Reduction in Nigeria’s Digital Infrastructure Costs

2024 World Consumer Rights Day

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has reaffirmed its dedication to fast-tracking its Green Telecoms Initiative, to transform Nigeria’s digital infrastructure by implementing environmentally sustainable technologies in line with leading global practices.

The Commission indicated that this initiative could result in a reduction of operational expenses by as much as 50 percent throughout the telecommunications industry, in addition to fostering environmentally responsible and energy-saving operations.

During a recent Green Conference, Dr. Aminu Maida, the Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the NCC, stressed that the incorporation of green telecom solutions would allow service providers to substantially lower costs while enhancing their environmental impact.

While addressing attendees on behalf of the Commission, Mr. Shuaibu Swade, the Head of Projects, remarked that Nigeria’s telecom industry holds an essential role at the convergence of connectivity and ecological accountability.

“As the authority regulating telecommunications, we exist at the junction of connectivity and eco-friendliness. Telecommunications serve as the foundation of the digital economy, yet it is essential that it also supports environmental stewardship,” he stated.

Maida elaborated that the current growth of digital infrastructure brings both chances and responsibilities for service providers, especially in terms of reducing carbon emissions via energy-efficient systems and renewable energy-powered base stations.

A fundamental element of this initiative, as articulated by the NCC, is the shift away from high-carbon energy sources, like diesel generators, toward renewable energy alternatives. This transition alone has the potential to decrease operational costs by anywhere from 30 to 50 percent.

Swade also pointed out additional strategic priorities, such as collaboration on infrastructure among telecom companies, broader implementation of renewable energy for telecom towers, and better handling of electronic waste produced by digital devices.

The Commission has also revealed intentions to enhance Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) reporting standards throughout the telecommunications landscape, aiming to boost transparency and accountability regarding sustainable practices.

In addition to environmental benefits, the NCC underscored the wider effects of digital technologies in lowering emissions by facilitating remote work, broadening digital service offerings, and backing smart solutions that diminish the need for travel and other high-carbon activities.

Participants at the conference echoed these sentiments, observing that green telecom infrastructures not only reduce operational expenses but also strengthen network resilience and enhance connectivity in underserved rural areas.

Reiterating its stance, the NCC emphasized that the future of telecommunications must prioritize environmental sustainability, urging industry participants to urgently adopt green solutions.
