A world-class and cutting-edge ICT Park has been commissioned by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) at the University of Ibadan in Ibadan, Oyo State, southwest Nigeria on Tuesday.
The inauguration of the ICT Park is a strategic push to accelerate Nigeria’s digital transformation, and this landmark initiative establishes UI as a premier hub for technological innovation, research, and entrepreneurship in the Southwest.
The commissioning ceremony featured the Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, Dr. Aminu Maida, represented by Engr. Abraham Osadami, Head of Technical Standards. Osadami described the new ICT Park as a “one-stop hub for innovation,” purpose-built to foster emerging technologies and develop digital solutions tailored to Nigeria’s unique socio-economic landscape.
Reflecting on his personal connection to UI, Osadami an alumnus of the institution called the project “a fulfillment of a national assignment.” He noted that the facility is one of six digital infrastructure projects strategically deployed by the NCC nationwide to boost innovation ecosystems and strengthen Nigeria’s R&D capabilities.
“The choice of UI was intentional,” he said. “This university is more than a school, it’s a launchpad for ideas that can reshape society. Whatever starts here can spark nationwide change.”
The ICT Park is equipped with high-capacity computers, intelligent networking systems, a multipurpose hall, and dynamic workspaces designed to support frontier technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT). The facility aims to incubate homegrown innovations that can drive inclusive development, social transformation, and economic growth.
“This isn’t just a building,” Osadami urged students, faculty, and the Oyo community, “it’s a spark for a digital revolution. Let’s treat it as a shared legacy preserve it, maximize it, and build on it.”
University of Ibadan Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kayode Adebowale, hailed the facility as a “defining moment” in UI’s history and a bold investment in Nigeria’s future.
“This ICT Park is far more than infrastructure,” he said. “It’s a bridge over the digital divide and a springboard for transforming how we teach, learn, and conduct research. The NCC has delivered a beacon of progress one that aligns perfectly with UI’s mission to foster innovation and develop smart campus technologies.”
The facility includes a 100-seat main hall, five specialized ICT hub halls, a 24-seater lounge with eight dual-computer workstations, collaborative zones, and administrative offices all optimized for next-generation research, learning, and entrepreneurship.
As Nigeria navigates the digital era, the newly unveiled ICT Park positions UI at the forefront of the nation’s innovation ecosystem poised to inspire breakthroughs and groom the digital leaders of tomorrow.
