The Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Dr. Aminu Maida is looking forward to a rewarding Year 2026 to all stakeholders of the telecommunications sector in the country.
According to him, the consumers will be the central focus of the Commission this year with the agenda to ensure that they have something good to show for their money.
“As we begin 2026, Nigeria’s communications sector remains central to how we live, work, learn, and do business. Our shared expectation for the year ahead is simple but critical: better quality of experience for consumers, delivered through a fair, competitive, and sustainable market. When services are reliable and affordable, trust is built; when investment is stable, networks expand, innovation thrives, and more Nigerians can participate meaningfully in the digital economy. This vision aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and the ambition to build a $1 trillion digital economy by 2030,” Maida said.
Recalling the business environment in 2025, he said last year produced verifiable results that have bearing multiplier effects on the telecoms sector.
“The year 2025 marked a turning point. Investment momentum returned, network expansion accelerated, and measurable improvements were recorded across coverage, capacity, and performance. Broadband subscriptions grew to over 109 million, median download speeds improved significantly, and 4G and 5G coverage continued to expand nationwide. Major initiatives such as Project BRIDGE are strengthening Nigeria’s digital backbone, while closer collaboration with institutions like the Central Bank of Nigeria is already delivering tangible consumer benefits, including refunds for unsuccessful airtime and data transactions.
Yet, challenges remain. Infrastructure constraints, and uneven service quality in some areas remind us that progress must be deepened and sustained. In 2026, our focus is clear: better protection and value for consumers, a predictable environment for investment, and a resilient, secure communications ecosystem that leaves no Nigerian behind.
“We invite consumers, operators, and partners to read our full New Year Message and learn more about the priorities guiding the sector in the year ahead,” he said.
