As the 8th edition of the National Youth Games officially declared opened on Thursday, Lagos state athletes are optimistic of podium finishes as the event unfold across various sports.
The youngsters stole the show with their beautiful white apparel at the match past of the opening ceremony heralding 2024 NYG at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba, Delta State.
Ready to showcase talents and make the state proud, the youngsters expressed excitement with the opportunity to represent Lagos at the national championship for athletes who are below 15 years of age.
Chidera Nwokedi, who is competing in Judo said it is a privilege for her to represent, declared her readiness to face any opponent in her weight category. The 10-year-old exudes confidence that with the training and different techniques in her repertoire she’s fully prepared to finish on the podium.
Budding athletics star, Blessing Egbowon, who specialized in Shotput, stressed that it’s a joyful moment for her to be among the athletes representing Lagos and her presence in Asaba is to set record and win gold.
“I want to work harder, push forward and be the best I can,” said Egbowon.
Muhammad Uthman, a Cricketer stated that Team Lagos have been working and training from dawn to dusk for the big stage as far as the NYG is concerned and the opportunity to represent Lagos at the developmental championship meant so much to him and the cricket team who are sure of claiming gold in the event.
Uthman said they will ensure all the techniques instilled in them were put into practice when the matches began at the St.Patrick College, Asaba.
Oluwadarasimi Bolade, another Judo athlete said, “I feel so happy and honour to be part of the athletes representing Lagos at the 2024 National Youths Games”.
Bolade pointed out that every athlete has in mind whatever they are planning for, but her personal target is to hone skills in the martial art and make the state proud by winning a gold medal.
No fewer than 270 Team Lagos athletes are competing in 34 individual and team sports events.
