Lagos Takes Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Advocacy To Badagry School

As part of Lagos State Government’s continuous efforts to strengthen prevention and response to Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV), the Community Engagement Team, led by Mr. Damilare Adewusi conducted a sensitisation visit to Sito Gbethrome Junior School, Badagry West, on Wednesday, 18th December 2025, as the year gradually draws to an end.

The engagement was designed to educate students on Sexual and Gender-Based Violence, Domestic Violence, Child Abuse, and Technology-Facilitated Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (TFSGBV), with a focus on early awareness, prevention, and the promotion of safe reporting practices among young people.

The session was facilitated by Miss Bunmi Amosu, who provided a comprehensive and age-appropriate explanation of key concepts, including SGBV, TFSGBV, child abuse, child protection mechanisms, and the rights and responsibilities of children within their homes, schools, and communities.

Miss Amosu emphasised the importance of personal safety, healthy boundaries, and recognising inappropriate behaviours, particularly in both physical and online environments. She highlighted how technology can be misused to perpetrate abuse. She encouraged students to remain vigilant while using digital platforms.

The sensitisation session was educative and interactive, allowing students to ask questions, share their concerns, and participate actively in discussions. This interactive approach enhanced understanding and ensured that key messages were clearly communicated and understood.

In addition, the facilitator shared official reporting channels available for victims and witnesses of abuse, stressing the importance of speaking up, seeking help early, and reporting incidents through trusted adults, school authorities, and designated DSVA channels.

School authorities commended the Community Engagement Team for the initiative, noting that such sensitisation programmes are critical in equipping students with the knowledge and confidence needed to protect themselves and support peers who may be experiencing abuse.

The visit to Sito Gbethrome Junior School reaffirmed DSVA’s commitment to community-based prevention, child protection, and the creation of safer learning environments, while reinforcing the need for sustained engagement with schools as key stakeholders in the fight against SGBV and other related forms of abuse.
