Lagos has reinforced its status as Africa’s esports powerhouse with the successful hosting of GamrX 2025, the continent’s biggest competitive gaming tournament.
The event, held at the Landmark Event Centre, Victoria Island, brought together over 1,000 gamers from over 13 African countries, competing across titles such as Street Fighter, Red Bull Kumite, EA FC, Mortal Kombat, PUBG Mobile, and Call of Duty Mobile for a multimillion-naira prize pool.
Thousands of spectators attended in person, while countless esports enthusiasts followed online, reflecting the surging popularity of competitive gaming across the continent.

Organised by Gamr Africa in collaboration with the Lagos State Sports Commission, the tournament underscored the city’s strategic ambitions in the fast-growing digital sports economy, with projections showing Lagos could generate up to $7.9 million in esports revenue by 2029 and attract more than $30 million in investments over the next five years.
Speaking at the event, Mr Lekan Fatodu, Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, described Lagos as “a global reference point in the promotion of diverse sports” and applauded Governor of Lagos State, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his foresight and commitment in driving sports as a tool for economic growth and youth engagement.

GamrX 2025 also showcased Lagos’s dedication to inclusivity, encouraging female participation and spotlighting African game developers whose work blends local storytelling with global appeal.
With Africa’s gaming market forecast to surpass $10 billion by 2033, Lagos is not merely preparing to ride the wave, it is staking its claim as a continental leader through bold infrastructure investments, talent development and strategic global partnerships.
