Lagos Boosts Badagry Tourism Facilities With Solar Power

The Lagos State Government, through the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, has installed solar power systems in key tourism facilities in Badagry as part of efforts to take the sites off the national grid and enhance tourism development in the area.

Speaking on behalf of the Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs.Toke Benson-Awoyinka, the Director of the Monuments Management Department, Mr. Ibrahim Ladejobi, during an inspection of the projects by a team from the Ministry, on Thursday, 24th January 2026.

According to the Commissioner, the project aims to enhance visitors’ experiences at the facilities, encourage increased tourist patronage, and create memorable and seamless experiences for tourists and other visitors. The facilities that benefited from the solar installations include the Badagry Heritage Museum, the Vlekete Slave Market, and the Tourist Information Centre in Badagry.

She noted that the solar power systems were completed under the supervision of the Lagos State Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources to ensure quality delivery and sustainability.

Mrs. Benson-Awoyinka, explained that the intervention became necessary due to the persistent epileptic power supply affecting key tourism sites within Badagry.

“To bridge the gap and address the recurring complaints from tourists and visitors over power challenges at these sites, the Ministry sought an alternative energy solution to guarantee uninterrupted services,” she added.
