The Government College football team won the 2024 edition of the Mainland Schools Cup, the final of which was played on Tuesday at Obele Mini Stadium in Surulere, Lagos.
The school sports football competition was organized by Kidsport in conjunction with NexStar Sports with facilitating support from KingMakers, a leading Sports and Digital Entertainment platform in Africa, and Prioriserv Consult Ltd., an indigenous engineering project management agency.
In the final watched by a mammoth crowd of football enthusiasts, who thronged to Obele Mini Stadium to see the youngsters at their best on the field of play, the champions, who won the last edition of the competition, whitewashed their opponents, Glittering Gate in a 4-0 big win.
The third-place match was won by Zumuratul Islamiyah Senior School after they defeated Fountain Height 3-2.
Fawaz from GCL was accorded the Highest Goalscorer award of the tournament.
Eight teams participated in the KingMakers-supported school sports football competition.
Kidsport’s Founder, Bukola Alabi commended the football artistry displayed by the youngsters. She enjoined the student players to take their academic work seriously even as they looked forward to becoming great football stars in the future.
She praised the support from KingMakers which has always been a pillar of support for all the activities of Kidsport.
Onaopepo Ado, the co-founder of Nextstar Sports thanked the schools and organizations that supported them for believing in the project.
Princeton Schools came back to win first place in the Esports/gaming category, in second place were Fountain Schools, while Princeton took the third place position.
In the Just Dance game, Las Vegas Schools won first and second place, while Fountain Schools picked the third position.
