This weekend’s edition of the Glo-sponsored CNN International’s magazine show, African Voices Changemakers, focused on the incredible journey and strides of mixed martial arts champion, Themba Gorimbo.


The show, which aired on Saturday, January 24, included a discussion with the UFC fighter who was born in Zimbabwe. Gorimbo’s journey from the periphery of society to the international arena is a tale of resiliency moulded by adversity, survival and an unwavering faith in purpose.

In the interview, Gorimbo discusses his difficult childhood, which included smuggling diamonds in Zimbabwe as a youngster and barely escaping death while entering South Africa illegally. He candidly discusses how those encounters influenced his mental toughness and resolve to use sports to transform his life.

Broadcasts were set for Saturday at 8:30 a.m. and 12:00 p.m., Sunday at 4:30 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., Monday at 4:00 a.m. and 6:45 p.m., and Tuesday at 6:45 p.m. in order to accommodate viewers in various time zones. Next week, there will be more reruns at the same times, all West African time.

As Gorimbo describes how he used hardship as inspiration, viewers will get important insights on perseverance, responsibility, and self-belief.
