It was a celebration galore on Saturday morining after First Waka A emerged the champions of Lagos Waka football league.
Waka football in Nigeria is known as Walking football at the global level. The league which featuring four teams was being organised and managed by Lagos Waka Football Association.
Waka A football team played 1-1 with managers football team to top the league.Although Waka A football team just need a draw to top the league.
The league which kicked off some weeks ago came to an end on Saturday morning at the Eagles Club football pitch, Surulere, Lagos.
The four participating teams are First Waka A football team, Managers football team, First waka B football team and Apapa Ajegunle football team.
Before today’s match both First Waka A and Managers have 12 points on the log,A draw or win to First Waka A would be crowned as champions on goal difference of +15 goals against managers +7, while Managers needed outright victory to emerge as winners.
The six aside league format which was watched by appreciable crowd ended in one goal apiece had lived up to expectations in term of standard of play by the both teams.
Reacting to the victory, Emmanuel Ibru expressed delight that his team won inaugural edition of Lagos Waka football league and commended his teammates for their doggedness and commitment exhibited in all the matches.
He explained that all the four teams played to expections since the league kicked off but noted that his team were better side and deserved to be crowned as champions.
The champions went home with a giant trophy and sum of N400,000, while Managers football team received N250,000 for the second position. Waka B Team went home with N150,000 for the third position as Apapa Ajegunle who came fourth position received N100,000.
At the award presentation, Amezi Nwanze of Waka A team won higest goal scorer award with 7 goals, Ibekwe Ugochukwu of Waka A also won most valuable player award as Fair play award went to thh Apapa Ajegunle.
Commenting on the league, Chairman Lagos Waka Football Association, Godson Uti thanked God for the success of the league and particularly congratulated the champions for the.job well done.
He explained that Waka football league is meant for those who are aboved 50 years old.He also disclosed that Waka football is not only meant for ex internationals alone saying that anybody that is aboved 50 years old are eligible to feature in Waka football league in Nigeria.
