A total of eight selected rugby football clubs are expected to participate in the Golden 9’s Rugby League Tournament scheduled to hold on Sunday at the Navy Barracks, Ajegunle, Lagos.

The one day tournament is being sponsored by Shakirat Wuraola Hussain in collaboration and supported by Ibudo Rugby Association.

In the men category, four teams were selected based on their recent performance. The teams are Lagos Bulls,Kings RFC,Rhino RLC and R2 Finesse.

Among the four teams in the women’s category are Golden Rugby Club,Lagos Bulls Ladies, Pitbull RL RC and Eko Trinity Ladies.

Match cordinator, Shakirat Wuraola Hussain said all the eight teams are fully ready for the one day event and urged the participating teams to play according to the rules and regulations.

Hussain however expressed satisfaction with the preparations of the teams but noted that the game of rugby in Lagos is gradually going down in the state due to lack of competitions and sponsors.

“I am doing this to encourage the lovers of Rugby football. I also thank Ibudo Rugby Association for its support to make this event comes to reality.

“I am aware that the game is not popular like football, athletics and boxing not only in Lagos but Nigeria as a whole but i am trying to assist our rugby players who are taking this game as profession so that it would make them fit ahead of future national engagements,”she said.

Hussain disclosed that prize money, trophy and medals would be presented to winners and first runners up in the one day tournament.
