Congratulatory messages have continued to pour in for the Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress after they were fourth time winners of FIBA Women’s Afrobasket Championship.
The Nigerian ladies defeated their arch-rivals, Senegal in the final of the tournament played on Saturday in Kigali, Rwanda. The team emerged champions of Africa again following their 84-74 win over Senegal in the final tournament on Saturday at the BK Arena in Kigali, Rwanda.
First to congratulate the African champions was President Bola Ahmed Tinubu who said the win was a well-deserved victory.
Tinubu congratulated the team saying, “I congratulate our very own D’Tigress #tigressNG for a well-deserved fourth consecutive AfroBasket Women Championship.
“We are proud of you.”
Former Senate President, Bukola Saraki said: “I heartily congratulate the D’Tigress on their fourth consecutive victory in the FIBA Women’s Afrobasket Championship.
“This is a historic moment for women’s basketball in Nigeria, and I am particularly proud of Rema Wakama for making history as the first female coach to lead her team to victory in the Championship.
Independent News Express reports that the Rena Wakama-led ladies outclassed hosts Rwanda 79-48 in the semi-finals of the ongoing 2023 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket in Kigali, Rwanda, to book a place in the final.
With the win on Thursday, D’Tigress extended their unbeaten run to 23 games. The last time Nigeria lost a game in the Women’s Afrobasket was in 2015 against Cameroon in the semi-finals.
Rena Wakama is now the first woman coach to win the FIBA Women’s Afro basketball championship.
The victory makes Nigeria the second African country to win the Women’s Afrobasket title four times in a row.
