The inauguration edition of Asela Golden football tournament tagged”Asela Golden Cup”kicked off over the weekend at Isiwu Primary School, Ikorodu, Lagos.
Eight teams within Ikorodu axis are taking part in the tournament sponsored by Prince Jimoh Ibrahim popularly known as Asela.
A total of ten teams registered for the tournament.Group A comprises of Phoenix FC,Ajeniya FC,Jombo FC,Strongest FC and Right 2 Smile FC.
Group B made up of Avengers FC,Alimi Rugged Star FC,Odogwu FC,Onafoyin FC and Bisola FC.
In the opening match played over the weekend Right 2 Smile lost 0-1 to Strongest FC
Speaking after the opening match, the cup donor, Ibrahim expressed delight with the organisation and officiating of the match saying that the best team won the encounter.
Ibrahim explained that he sponsored the tourney in order to promote the unity,love and spirit of sportsmanship among the participating clubs in Ikorodu and its environs.
Meanwhile Asela Golden cup is a grassroots competition to showcase the skills, talents of young footballers in the community. Asela Golden Cup targets young players from the ages of 15 to 20 years.
Chairman Ikorodu Divisional Football Association chairman Alhaji Lookman Shonibare, Members of the press, community chiefs and football supporters were in attendance to grace the opening ceremony.
