Ngeria’s Elizabeth Anyanacho Tuesday beat Egypt’s Aya Mohammed Mahmoud Mohamed Shehata by 2-1 in the final of the Women’s Under 67kg to win the gold medal in the taekwondo event in the ongoing 13th All African Games.
The Egyptian who lost to Anyanacho is Africa’s number one ranked.
The 24-year-old started her journey earlier today when she beat Chawquia Zabsore of Burkina Faso by 2-0 at noon to reach the semifinal.
In the semifinal she slugged it out with Morocco’s Safia Salih for a spot in the podium stage and a 2-1 win was enough to put her through to the final where she defeated her Egyptian counterpart.
The win which came at the nick of time keep Nigeria’s hope of finishing second alive as they now have 29 gold medals and are trailed by South Africa who have 27 gold medals.
As at press time, Egypt still leading on the medal table with 92 gold, 40 silver and 32 bronze.Nigeria are second on the table with 29 gold, 21 silver and 31 bronze as South Africa maintain third position with 27 gold, 29 silver and 38 medals.
