Mikel Obi On NFF Leadership: “I Can’t Work With Them Because They’re So Corrupt

BY PAUL LUCKY OKOKU

Have you listened carefully to what John Mikel Obi said?

Speaking on the Joy Sports Podcast in Ghana in August 2026, the former Super Eagles captain made a blunt public declaration:

“I can’t work with them because they’re so corrupt.”

Joy Sports published the clip on August 23, 2026. Mikel was not speaking as a distant observer. He spent years inside Nigeria’s national-team structure, eventually wearing the captain’s armband.

That does not make his allegation proof.

But it makes his words impossible to dismiss casually.

𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐑𝐄𝐂𝐎𝐑𝐃 𝐊𝐄𝐄𝐏𝐒 𝐑𝐄𝐓𝐔𝐑𝐍𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐓𝐎 𝐌𝐎𝐍𝐄𝐘

Different administrations have come and gone.

Yet the same disputes keep resurfacing.

Players’ bonuses.

Coaches’ salaries.

Allowances.

Contracts.

Development funds.

In 2023, the NFF publicly acknowledged outstanding payments to national-team coaches and players, including salary arrears involving Jose Peseiro, Ladan Bosso and Randy Waldrum. BBC Sport reported that some unpaid obligations stretched back months or longer.

Now another major financial question is before investigators.

A ₦12 billion Federal Government intervention fund intended to address football obligations is under EFCC and ICPC investigation over its utilisation. In August 2026, the NFF itself said records relating to the fund were with the anti-corruption agencies as part of the investigation.

𝐓𝐑𝐀𝐍𝐒𝐏𝐀𝐑𝐄𝐍𝐂𝐘 𝐌𝐔𝐒𝐓 𝐁𝐄 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐀𝐍𝐒𝐖𝐄𝐑

This is where Nigerian football must change.

When money is received, show what was received.

When it is spent, show where it went.

When obligations are cleared, show the record.

When investigations begin, the public deserves to know how they end.

Not rumor.

Not propaganda.

Not speculation.

Records.

Audits.

Documentation.

Completed investigations.

Accountability where the evidence supports it.

For too long, Nigerian football has lived with the cycle of allegation, announcement, investigation and silence.

That cycle must end.

Mikel Obi has placed an extraordinary allegation into the public record.

The proper response is not another round of shouting.

It is transparency.

Because if Nigerian football is serious about reform, accountability cannot remain something demanded only after a scandal.

It must become the operating standard.

This article examines matters already in the public domain and the documented statements of John Mikel Obi and publicly reported financial and investigative records concerning Nigerian football administration. It makes no independent allegation of criminal wrongdoing against any individual.

Sources reviewed include the August 23, 2026 Joy Sports interview clip featuring John Mikel Obi; BBC Sport reporting on unpaid salaries, bonuses and allowances involving Nigerian national teams; and public reporting concerning the EFCC and ICPC investigation into the ₦12 billion Federal Government football intervention fund. Claims are attributed to their sources, and no conclusion is drawn beyond what the documented record supports.
