ATU Celebrates Nigeria at 66, Commends Digital Economy Drive

The African Telecommunications Union (ATU) has congratulated Nigeria on its 66th Independence Anniversary, describing the country’s national journey as closely intertwined with Africa’s broader development story.

In a message marking Nigeria’s Independence Day on October 1, the continental telecommunications body said Nigeria’s role in Africa had taken on particular significance for the Union this year, following the hosting of the 7th Ordinary Session of the ATU Conference of Plenipotentiaries in Abuja in July.

According to the ATU, the Abuja meeting brought together African Member States to take key decisions that will guide the Union through its next cycle.

“On this day, we join the people of Nigeria in celebrating 66 years of independence, a national journey that has long carried its weight in Africa’s own story,” the Union said.

The ATU noted that its connection with Nigeria had been “especially close” in 2026, citing the successful hosting of the plenipotentiary conference in the Nigerian capital.

The Union also used the occasion to recognise Nigeria’s growing ambitions in the digital sector, commending the efforts of the Federal Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy and the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) in expanding connectivity and advancing the country’s digital economy.

The ATU said Nigeria’s digital development efforts were contributing to the broader objectives of strengthening telecommunications and digital transformation across Africa.

The recognition comes as Nigeria continues to position digital connectivity, telecommunications infrastructure and the wider digital economy as important components of its national development agenda.

The ATU’s message further underscores Nigeria’s role in continental telecommunications cooperation, particularly through its engagement with African institutions and participation in initiatives aimed at advancing connectivity and digital transformation across the continent.
