The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening collaboration with key stakeholders to ensure the continued resilience, growth and sustainability of Nigeria’s telecommunications industry.
The Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Commission, Dr. Aminu Maida, gave the assurance while receiving a delegation of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), led by its President, Dr. Ike Neliaku, at the Commission’s headquarters in Maitama, Abuja.
Dr. Maida said the NCC would continue to work closely with professional bodies, including the NIPR, to enhance public awareness, promote responsible communication, and deepen stakeholder engagement on issues affecting the telecommunications sector.
He commended the NIPR for securing the hosting rights for the 2026 World Public Relations Forum, describing the achievement as a testament to perseverance, effective strategic communication, and Nigeria’s growing influence on the global stage.
According to him, the successful bid demonstrated the importance of taking ownership of national narratives and effectively communicating Nigeria’s strengths to the international community.
“It tells a compelling story of perseverance, strategic communication, and the importance of owning the narrative. It also reflects our ability to convincingly demonstrate to the Global Alliance and other stakeholders why Nigeria deserves the opportunity to host the forum,” Maida said.
The NCC boss further stressed the need for sustained efforts to project a positive image of Nigeria internationally, noting that the African Telecommunications Union (ATU) Conference of Plenipotentiaries is scheduled to be hosted by Nigeria in July 2026.
He urged the NIPR to leverage the continental gathering to further showcase Nigeria’s strengths, enhance its global reputation, and reinforce the country’s position as a leading destination for investment, innovation, and strategic partnerships within Africa’s telecommunications ecosystem.
On the national level, Dr Maida said the Commission is undertaking education, sensitization and awareness creation on its regulatory initiative to improve accountability and stabilize the sector such as campaigns on Critical National Information Infrastructure (CNII) protection; efficient data usage, directive to mobile network operators on simplified tariff, public coverage map and creating the necessary environment to ensure competitiveness in the industry.
The EVC said the tough decisions taken in the telecom sector have begun to yield visible results by the level of investment recorded. “Through the efforts that we have been making to stabilize the sector; we have been able to restore investor confidence. The level of investment we are seeing now is not about keeping the lights on, it is about growing the industry and this is something we have not seen for years before my time; and it is a sign of investors saying we have confidence in the sector, in the reforms of the government, in the regulator and we believe there is opportunity in this market,” he noted.
The NIPR President, Dr Neliaku, commended the NCC’s commitment to collaboration and stakeholder engagement while acknowledging the Commission’s role in advancing Nigeria’s digital economy. He expressed the institute’s readiness to collaborate on initiatives that promote responsible communication, reputation management, and the creation of public awareness on the Commission’s regulatory initiatives.
The visit underscores the importance of strategic partnerships in promoting public trust, institutional excellence, and the continued growth of Nigeria’s communications ecosystem.
