NCC Launches Women in Leadership Programme to Boost Female Representation in Telecoms

NCC

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has launched a Women in Leadership Programme aimed at equipping more Nigerian women with the skills, knowledge and opportunities needed to assume senior management and executive positions in the telecommunications industry.

The initiative, unveiled in Abuja, is part of the Commission’s broader commitment to promoting diversity, inclusion and equal opportunities across Nigeria’s telecommunications ecosystem.

Designed to prepare women for leadership roles, the programme will provide participants with structured leadership training, mentorship from experienced industry professionals and networking opportunities to accelerate their career growth and enhance their capacity to lead in an increasingly technology-driven sector.

Speaking at the launch, the Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, Dr. Aminu Maida, described the programme as a strategic investment in the future of the telecommunications industry, noting that empowering women to take on leadership responsibilities would strengthen institutions, improve governance and drive sustainable growth.

According to him, the Commission remains committed to building a more inclusive telecoms sector where women can make meaningful contributions to innovation, policy formulation and digital transformation.

He said the initiative reflects the NCC’s belief that gender diversity in leadership is critical to improving organisational performance, enhancing decision-making and fostering innovation across the industry.

The Commission explained that participants will benefit from practical leadership development programmes, one-on-one mentorship with accomplished industry leaders and expanded professional networks that will position them for higher responsibilities within the sector.

Beyond developing current professionals, the programme is also intended to inspire young women pursuing careers in telecommunications, information and communications technology (ICT), engineering and related fields to aspire to leadership positions while helping to dismantle barriers that have historically limited female representation at executive levels.

The NCC stressed that increasing women’s participation in leadership aligns with global best practices and supports Nigeria’s ambition to build an inclusive, innovative and globally competitive digital economy.

Stakeholders at the launch described the initiative as a significant milestone in advancing gender inclusion within the telecommunications industry, expressing confidence that sustained mentorship, institutional support and continuous investment in women’s leadership development would produce a new generation of female executives capable of driving innovation, transformation and sustainable growth in Nigeria’s communications sector.

The Women in Leadership Programme adds to the Commission’s ongoing efforts to promote human capital development and create a more diverse workforce capable of meeting the evolving demands of the country’s rapidly expanding digital economy.
