The Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) Alumni Association (FUTOAA) has raised an alarm over the extensive encroachment on the university’s land. According to the National President of FUTOAA, Engr. Prof. Laz Uzoechi, those allegedly involved include the 34 Artillery Brigade of the Nigerian Army, Obinze, along with host communities and other land grabbers.
Prof. Uzoechi made the announcement on Saturday, August 16, 2025, at a press conference held at the Immaculate Excellence Hotel in Owerri, which marked the conclusion of the association’s 2025 Homecoming and Convention.
“Lands belonging to FUTO are being encroached from all sides,” Prof. Uzoechi stated. He explained that a report from the university’s management confirmed the issue. He also highlighted the severity of the problem, noting that FUTO’s current landmass of 4.45 hectares is already the minimum required for a federal university in Nigeria.
He further contrasted FUTO’s land size with that of other institutions, such as the University of Ilorin and the University of Abuja, which have twice the land areas of FUTO. He also pointed out that the encroachment is specifically targeting the university’s land extending towards the River Otamiri.
In response to the “unwarranted provocation,” the FUTO Alumni Association has resolved to join forces with the university management to reclaim the land. “We shall follow every legal process required to recover FUTO land,” Prof. Uzoechi affirmed.
The lack of perimeter fencing around the university was identified as a major factor contributing to the increased encroachment. Prof. Uzoechi stated that the association would explore avenues to ensure the university is properly fenced.
He concluded by calling on key government officials for assistance, expressing optimism that the university’s management, led by Prof. (Mrs) Nnenna Nnannaya, will secure justice. The association plans to petition the National Assembly on the matter, appealing to the Visitor to the University, His Excellency Sen. Ahmed Bola Tinubu, to intervene and resolve the issue.
