A former Belgian football referee Serge Gumienny has disagreed with VAR over the cancellation of a goal scored by Tolu Arokodare in the first half during their 4-0 win over Gent.
The Super Eagles forward’s goal was cancelled after a Gent player handled the ball inside his box before Arokodare scored with VAR ruling the goal be cancelled. A penalty was later awarded which was played by Arokodare and he lost the spot-kick.
However, Serge Gumienny said the goal ought to have stood
“I do not understand why that goal by Tolu was disallowed. Allegedly because Bonsu Baah touched the ball with his hand after he was pushed over, but that happened involuntarily in full fall with his supporting arm”, he told Het Belang van Limburg.
“If Tolu’s shot had deflected off Bonsu Baah’s hand, I could understand if the goal had been disallowed, but that was clearly not the case here. VAR should have just let it happen.”
Despite missing the penalty, Arokodare went on to score in the game to contribute to his side’s 4-0 win over Gent, his goal moved his tally to 18 goals for this season in the Belgian league.
