Rugby activities returns to the Warri axis of Delta State with the hosting of a Warri Rugby Rumble Matches from 4 – 7 April 2025 at the Nana Model College, Warri in the Oil rich City.
The Rugby event will feature the South South Rugby Champions Edo State Rugby Male teams against the Warri Rugby Football Club in a 7’s, 10’s & 15-A-Side Rugby Challenge matches.
The Visitors who recently qualified for the National Rugby League Finals will use this encounter as one of its warm friendly preparations. We sincerely thank the “Mr Rugby” Obong Ntiense Williams who has graciously assisted to put up this event with his team.
According to the organisers and Coach of the Warri Eagles Rugby Club Mr Victor Nwachukwu “It will be a huge privilege to host the South ZONAL Champions in Warri after many years. RUGBY has been in Warri since the early years when oil was discovered, and we have been involved in different Rugby activities which includes National Rugby Tournaments in Lagos, Jos and Abuja and also have players in the Male National teams. Said he, we have also been involved in the Catch Them Young Schools Program which has enabled us to breed new and upcoming Rugby players. This program has greatly helped to reduce the restiveness of our youth and give them meaningful avenues to exert their energy and God given talent into useful ventures that can help out food on their table legally”
Said Victor, “This Rugby match is actually a testament of one of us who grew up playing the beautiful game with us and is now doing very well outside the country still playing the game and has returned to celebrate with his homies. Mr Aghogho Peace Ejiro who plays as a Winger in England for the London Chargers Rugby League and the Nigeria Stallion 7’s UK and also a businessman who have decided to give back to society and the game that made him have a huge sense of belongings and fulfillment in life. We are so proud of him and we want to use his visit to Nigeria to encourage other Youths in the Community that sports and hard work pays. This will help to rid the society of crimes and make it a better place for everyone.
This worthwhile venture is also being powered by the “RUGBY LOVERS” group of old / Senior Rugby players who have decided to get involved in the real Rugby development in the country and return Rugby to what it used to be in the early 2000’s where Rugby activities mushroomed in the country at an alarming rate and made the Rugby one of the fastest growing lesser sports in the country. They have decided to take their destiny in their hand to bring back vibrancy to the game that they love so much.
The Warri Township will be agoged with Rugby activities with visitors from Lagos, Abuja, Edo, ASABA and England for this August Rugby Rumble that will take the oil rich town by surprise.
We are reliably informed that the Warri South Local Government Chairman Comrade Weyinmi Agbateyiniro has thrown his full weight behind the event to revive the beautiful game of Rugby back in Warri Township. Other distinguished indigens and dignitries will also grace the occasion.
