Surulere Archdeaconry football team this morning shocked their counterpart, Mushin Archdeaconry football team 2-1 in the quarter final of Diocese of Lagos Mainland football competition.
The pulsating encounter held at the CMS Grammar School, Bariga, Lagos.
Surulere who qualified as a best looser proved the bookmakers wrong after displaying tactical display against their opponents.
The encounter which watched by appreciable crowd saw Ajobo Opeyemi opening the goal scoring for Surulere.
The second half witnessed high tension soaked match.Mushin who were favourite to win the game could not find the equaliser until Olamiposi Monday scored the second goal for Surulere in the 72th minutes to confirm their supremacy over their opponents.
Mushin who were not at their best got their consolatory goal in the 79th minutes through Gbenga Oduwole.
Reacting to the victory,Anyawu Emeka expressed delight over his team’s performance and commended his players for their doggedness and determination exhibited throughout the game.
“It was a hard fought victory for us.Nobody gave us a chance when the tournament kicked off some weeks ago but we thank God that we shamed our critics.We are not going to stop at the semi final but to win the tournament,”he said.
In his response, Mushin coach, Deji Oyeneye described the defeat as unfortunate and blamed his players for not taking their scoring chances.
He admitted that his boys played below expectations and underated their opponents which cost them defeat.
Ajobo who won the best player award said the award would spur him to work hard and commended his teammates for the job well done.
